Europe’s Leading Public-Private Partnership for Cloud

The Helix Nebula Initiative is a partnership between industry, space and science to establish a dynamic ecosystem, benefiting from open cloud services for the seamless integration of science into a business environment. Today, the partnership counts over 40 public and private partners.

Helix Nebula @ Conference on Cyberspace, 4-5 October 2012, Budapest

Bob Jones (CERN) will present Helix Nebula-The Science Cloud in Cyberspace conference in Budapest.

Key points of CERN's presentation:

  • Scientific research requires advanced IT systems offering access to massive resources
  • Scientific research is all about collaboration: researchers share experimental data, algorithms and results.
  • Advanced IT systems allow researchers to collaborate at the speed of light by sharing ideas and knowledge in the form of datasets, code and publications
  • Sharing implies providing access to others and requires security policy and measures to ensure a level of trust between collaborating parties.
  • Existing publicly funded advanced IT systems, such the World-wide LHC Grid, rely on the security features and networks of trust that have been built into the underlying infrastructure.
  • The continuous progress of computing technology means that researchers can now tackle previously unattainable scientific problems that underlie the major challenges facing society today (population ageing, energy, security, mobility, environment degradation etc.).
  • The IT market is changing with the availability of new commercial services, such as cloud services, that means the IT resources used for publicly funded research will no longer be exclusively owned, managed and operated by public bodies.
  • The IT systems of the future will include a mixture of public and commercial resources and services that must inter-operate securely with mutual trust.
  • Federated Identity Management providing access to these hybrid public/private resources and services systems will be essential and will require policy measures to ensure a level of trust can be established between the stakeholders.
