Europe’s Leading Public-Private Partnership for Cloud

The Helix Nebula Initiative is a partnership between industry, space and science to establish a dynamic ecosystem, benefiting from open cloud services for the seamless integration of science into a business environment. Today, the partnership counts over 40 public and private partners.

Helix Nebula @ Digital Agenda Assembly (DAA), Dublin, Ireland, 19-20 June 2013

Bob Jones (CERN), Jurry de la Mar (T-Systems), Carmela Asero (EGI) and Mick Symonds (Atos) attended the Digital Agenda Assembly event held in Dublin, Ireland, on 19-20 June 2013.

The two day-event contained both subject-specific workshops and a plenary event.
Helix Nebula members, by invitation, attended the workshops on Cybertrust and security, and Broadband.

- The workshop on cybertrust and security focussed on end user security, with those end users being the weakest link.
- The workshop on broadband discussed how high-quality services can be assured for all, wherever they are located. The EC/EU is very concerned about the “long tail” of SME’s and home start-ups, who need quality access to the internet and services.

The plenary session was addressed by Neelie Kroes, who spoke “from the heart”, rather than giving her official speech. She emphasised that Europe should lead, in our own direction, not just follow; that the modern approach is “sharing and joining”; that security and trust are key, and that they should be to European rather than American norms and standards; and that cloud needs good infrastructure: for networks, that is pervasive broadband, and there should be a single market in Europe for such services.

It was a useful event for discussion with various members of the EC and others from around Europe; the opportunity was taken to ensure that Helix Nebula featured prominently in people’s thinking.
