Europe’s Leading Public-Private Partnership for Cloud

The Helix Nebula Initiative is a partnership between industry, space and science to establish a dynamic ecosystem, benefiting from open cloud services for the seamless integration of science into a business environment. Today, the partnership counts over 40 public and private partners.

Helix Nebula @ Roadmap on HPC and Cloud, 20-21 June, Stavanger, Norway

ESA presented Helix Nebula at Roadmap on HPC and Cloud, on 20-21 June at the University of Stavanger, Norway.

The event was organised in the framework of the SCC-Computing project, funded by European Commission under Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) that aims at establishing a strategic collaboration between EU, US and China in the HPC & Cloud domain of exploring a range of research issues.
The event addressed such topics as accountability for Cloud computing, latest status of HPC development and modelling.

ESA discussed  with representatives of the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation of the University of Michigan, who are interested in sharing data with the HN ESA flaghship (Super Sites Exploitation Platform).
In the broader  context of the EU-China  collaboration  scheme, China showed interest in data sharing through HN, in particular in the field of climate change. This would require increasing the network capacity between Europe (ESA) and University of Tianjin.

ESA will provide further details on a possible EU-CHINA collaboration.
HPC centres would need to be federated, possibly through HN. This possibility would have to be considered under the work package 6 framework, and possibly through PRACE and NERSC.

This workshop was a part of EU-China workshop series in collaboration with SCC-Computing network (www.scc-computing.eu). Previous workshop were organized in China (Tianjin, April 2012), Spain (Zaragoza, November 2012) and Bulgaria (Sofia, April 2013). Workshops have complimentary topics covering spectrum of interest of SCC-Computing network. This workshop was technically supported by IEEE Cloud Computing initiative (http://cloudcomputing.ieee.org/) and IEEE Intercloud Testbed (http://cloudcomputing.ieee.org/intercloud).
